He has seen and lived the impact of climate changes from the front lines. He grew up in a pastoralist family in Pallisa, Eastern Uganda. He comes from the Iteso tribe, where each child has specific household responsibilities. Boys take care of livestock; girls search to find water.
In December 2022, Nicholas represented the Most Affected People and Areas (MAPA) at COP27 alongside prominent young activists. In 2023, he founded End Fossil Occupy Uganda, a local climate movement demanding a phase-out of fossil fuels and a just transition for Africa. Nicholas is also the co-founder of Plant For My Future, an initiative mobilizing youth and communities across Africa to plant trees and educate people about climate change.
In April 2023, he organized a climate protest for more investment in renewable energies.
The insurance industry is one of the key “facilitators” of the fossil fuel giants, and in November 2024, Nicholas participated in an End the Fossil Fuel Era, in the UK where activists targeted the insurance industry. He described the intersections of climate impacts on Uganda, where increasing floods, landslides, drought and fossil fuel development have driven displacement and food and economic insecurity. “For us, with climate change, it’s not just a weather issue. It’s a social issue, it’s an economic issue, and that’s why we have to fight together.” (November 2024, Inside Climate News, see link in sidebar)
