The Need to Reinvent Ourselves and How We Educate Our Children
Sugata Mitra is a physicist, educational pioneer He was the creator of the famous “Hole in the Wall” experiment which was the inspiration for the School in the Cloud and for Self-organized Learning Environments, or SOLE. This innovative work led the one million dollar TED prize in 2013, given to forward thinkers with bold ideas and a vision and strong wish for making global change. Sugata once said “In an age where “knowing” may be obsolete, Homo sapiens will have to reinvent ourselves. The wish, I hope, will be a tiny step in that direction. If children have wings, they will learn how to fly.”
He makes it clear he is not talking about the end of knowledge. Listen to the podcast or watch the video and you’ll see what he means. He believes the internet will become so integrated into our lives, it will blur the line between knowing and not knowing
Sugata Mitra was the 2022 Brock Prize in Education Innovation Laureate. His comment about that shows how he thinks of individual success: “The best thing I like about the famed Brock Prize, is that it is given to an idea and not to an individual. It is my proud honor to accept this award on behalf of the children who showed me the idea of self-organized learning. In Victor Hugo’s words, ‘ … the idea — it is everything.’”
He strongly believes that we are educating our children for the way the past world worked, and not the future world they will be living in. We are not leveraging their natural curiosity.
Another strong idea from Sugata is that we are gradually building a collective value system, consciously or unconsciously, and he writes about it on his comprehensive website: https://www.cevesm.com/.
