The Power of the Circular Economy for Waste Management
Godfrey Ssekiziyivu is a partner and Chief Technology Officer in End Plastic Pollution, a waste management organization that started in Ug
anda and that focuses on the intersection between people, the environment and the economy. They are working on implementing a zero-waste model for local communities.
A key innovation is the integration of AI for waste sorting. The app employs machine learning trained on approximately 50,000 images to identify recyclable versus non-recyclable waste, enabling users to simply photograph waste using their phone camera to receive classification. The app aims to reverse Uganda’s current waste management system, where generators typically pay collectors. Instead, the Kollekt model pays generators for their waste, and recyclers then repay collectors.
This approach helps build motivation for helping keep the environment free of waste, in particular plastic.
